The history of the hospital
The history of the hospital "MBAL – DR. ASEN VELEV" Ltd. reflects its long development and adaptation to the needs of the local population. Over the years, it has gone through many stages, starting as an isolation ward for infectious patients in 1925 and gradually transforming into a multi-functional healthcare facility.
In the early years, the hospital consisted of 25 beds dedicated to infectious diseases. Gradually, in the 1940s and 1950s, the hospital expanded, adding new departments and specialties, such as surgery, therapy, and pediatrics. This was accompanied by a significant increase in the number of beds and the establishment of new departments, including obstetrics-gynecology and infectious diseases.
In 1967, after the construction of a new building, the hospital had 260 beds and a wide range of specialized services. In recent decades, following healthcare reforms, it was transformed into a commercial company but retained its role as a major healthcare center for the region.
Today, the hospital serves four municipalities and plays an important role not only for the local population but also for tourists visiting the area, offering medical services to over 56,000 people. This makes it an essential part of the healthcare system in the region, providing access to quality care for both permanent and temporary residents.
